And now to reveal the long awaited, revered and ever respected Step #1 of the VES Successful Blogging 101- Turn Your Blog from “A Blog” into “The Blog” in just over a week (10-12 days to be exact). And with out further adieu…
Step #1: Write Shit Down (WSD)
In a lot of these self-help groups, (or at least the ones I attend), they tell you the first step is to realise you have a problem. While that may work for alcoholics or abusive drug addicts, it doesn’t help much when writing a blog. Plus you’ve already done that. That’s why you’re here! Oh, unless of course you are an alcoholic or abusive drug addict in which case I’ll talk to you at the meetings.
So my first step on the path to a successful Blog is to Write Shit Down (WSD) . Obvious Right?! But you would be surprised at how many people come up to me complaining about how their blog isn’t getting enough hits and when I go on there I see a blank page. Seriously people. Your blog -and you can quote me on this- your blog will not be successful if you don’t WSD. Just get it down. Write something, anything. Just make sure that when somebody clicks on your blog that there is something to read! Believe me, despite what you may have heard to the contrary nobody goes onto a blog to stare at a blank page.
I did not get to where I am today by not WSD-ing. But dont take my advice. Lets hear from the professionals:
“I really found WSD-ing a huge help when writing the internet”- Tim Berners-Lee
“Yes I was well aware that my books made no sense but I just kept WSD-ing and it has turned me from a penniless hack into the world famous literary genius I’m seen as today. Thanks VES Successful Blogging 101!” –James Joyce.
While Writing Shit Down (TM) can undoubtedly help most blogs, a blank page or two could do wonders for some of your content. You know what I’m talking about.
You probably think you know what people like. The simple truth is that you don’t. Lets face it if you did you’d probably have friends instead of having to write a blog to make yourself feel loved. Lets be honest, nobody in real life wants to listen to you waffle on about your day let alone read about it! Nobody wants to hear about how your kitten got tangled in a ball of wool for the 17th time today or your dog’s ‘hilarious’ adventures on your daily walks and nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wants to know about your thoughts on anything.
So now having this knowledge should help you to narrow down the contents of your blog. Stick to dark prose on society’s ills. People like that. Make sure to use expressive language. It helps if you have a dictionary close by. Flip through it and pick a page at random, then pick a word at random from that page and add it to your sentence. It wont make sense but don’t worry because 55% of blog readers cant actually read anyway. If they could, lets be honest, they wouldn’t bother reading blogs would they?
It may also help to think about what you want to write about and then go ahead and write the complete opposite.
So what have we learned here today? When writing a blog it helps if you Write Something Down(TM). If you follow my advice you should be on track to creating one of the greatest blogs of all time! So give WSD-ing a try and tune in next time to find out how to go about getting traffic to your site.
