The Cheiftains (Feat. Elvis Costello)- St. Stephen’s day Murders
You’ve foolishly invited the extended family around to yours for some festive nibbles and drinks the day after Christmas. You did it because you got caught up in the festive spirit and everybody seemed so friendly and cordial a week ago. But what you failed to realise was that after Christmas, the event that was the social glue that held everything together, everything is now beginning to unravel. You hadn’t banked on the fact that everybody had tried so hard to be friendly on the lead up to Christmas that now its over they have all reverted back to the usual bastards that you remember them to be.
Cue the St. Stephens Day Murders. All that family drinking in one confined space is bound to lead to a few fights. Kids running amok and your Uncle’s “Gin flavoured whispers” spraying you in the face doesn’t help to maintain the calmness your vanilla scented candles would emit either.
Think you’re having a bad Christmas? listen to this track and it may just make you laugh it off. We always got a good laugh out of the lyrics:
“…When the lights from the Christmas tree blow up the telly”
Although this isn’t very likely these days, what with technology and all, my Dad assures me that this was a very real fear back in the day of the television tube.
So relax, try not to get involved in the inevitable bitterness and next year just go on holiday.
